I love Flickr, but sometimes their interface gets in the way and stuff takes more clicks that I'd like. One thing I like to do is view/download original size images with one click.
After doing some preliminary research, I found that out that you used to be able to figure out the url of the original image based on Flickr's standard url structure...but it seems Flickr has closed the loophole. Bummer.
My extension extracts the url of the image you select, parses out the image id, and sends it to a simple web service that uses the Flickr API to return the url of the original image.

Flickr Original 1.0.2
- Updated to be compatible with Firefox 3.5
- Added "View Original Flickr Image" option
- View/download options now only show up on valid Flickr photos
- Web service now returns the largest sized image available (for example, it will return the large version if the original isn't available)
Usage
After downloading and installing you'll be asked to restart Firefox. Do it.
While on Flickr, just right-click on the thumbnail you want to download full-size and select "Download Original Flickr Image". That's all!
Caveats
This won't work on images that the photographer has marked "All Rights Reserved" or has disabled downloading.

Why is it necessary to send to a web service? Is this to test if original version is available (_o) and if not redirect to (_b)? I have tried pulling the photo id with the page secret and server # to generate the url with success.
Nice extension, works great, but if it gets too popular won’t it kill your website?

@Yansky: Thanks for that link, I just ran across that script the other day. A number of differences with his script:
- doesn’t provide a download option (though it could be easily added)
- needs Greasemonkey
- he goes about finding the image url by regex matching from the photo zoom page, which can be fragile if Flickr ever decides to change its naming schema
@Jenny Mie: What method are you using to grab the secret for the original size? The original size uses a different secret than the other sizes. Re: if it gets too popular…we’ll see how my server does

Thinking about this more…it’s probably marginally faster making the browser do the work client-side (loading the photo view page and scraping the original url) rather than server-side (sending it to a web service). However, I’d rather stay on the safe side and future-proof the extension by using the API–Flickr has tightened up their image security once and I wouldn’t be surprised if they did it again.

Feature Request:

Don’t you think that people that do not want to let his/her photos being downloaded should be respected?
This is an insult, anyway, no one would stop this, there are many types of this program.

Works great!
Now we just need to figure out a work around for the; Whoops! You need to enter a valid Flickr photo ID.
I’m assuming that this comes from the photo being marked with All rights reserved tag.

this is terrific! however clicking on “download original image” does not open up a dialog box for me, it just loads the largest image and i then save page from the firefox menu. did i miss something? it’s not a huge pain but thought you might want to know.

Are you sure the original file is retrieved? with this addon I only get files with a 1024 pixel maximum

Sort of works. I don’t know if it’s Firefox 3.5.5 or the addon, but flickr original keeps displaying in-line instead of starting a download. It should always trigger whatever_d_.jpg. eg: abcdefg1234567_o_d.jpg as the “_d” causes it to download rather than display inline.
I realize the add-on has separate view and download options, but I’ve double-checked and I’m hitting the right menu option (download). I’ve also tried disabling other extensions but it doesn’t change anything.
